Codes go back as long as has been human communication…. and miscommunication. Binary informs many of the pattern codes– a logical, sequential pattern of Yes/No-Dot/Dash. But then there are hieroglyphs and Hobo Code (yes, that is an actual thing) which are all iconic and representative… even metaphorical, and up for interpretation. In Morse Code, it’s hard to say No when you mean Yes, but you still can’t guarantee the message will be understood when received.
